Raleigh & Gaston

The road was constructed between 1836 and 1840. During construction, it leased its track to the Petersburg Railroad for that road to provided rolling stock and operate the road until construction was completed. Completion of the road provided rail connection between Richmond and Raleigh (though over 3 railroads). The original strap iron construction was replaced with T-rails in 1852. A new machine shop was constructed in 1861, leaving the old shop to be leased as the Confederate Locomotive Shop in 1862. The road's connections at Weldon made it a very important link in the Charlotte-Raleigh-Petersburg-Richmond supply line.
