| The road was chartered in 1846.
Construction was begun in 1849 and completed in 1854. It connected the farm country south
and west of Petersburg to that city and to City Point, with its
connections to Northern ports. It also connected to the Virginia
& Tennessee Railroad at Lynchburg. |
