| An Important Work |
| A Railroad from the Coal
Fields in Chatham county {Chatham RR}, to
the N. C. Road at Greensboro, would be of great benefit to Western North
Carolina. The Foundries and Government work-shops located at and west of
Greensboro need coal, and all that is necessary to supply an abundance
of the best quality is to build a road of about 50 miles in length from
Greensboro to the coal-fields in Chatham county. The advantages to the
Government as well as to the public generally of such a connection
cannot be too highly estimated. There is a Road already built and in
daily operation from the coal fields to Fayetteville, and by building
the proposed link, the Government would have direct and quick access to
the inexhaustible coal-fields on Deep River, to the extensive Arsenal at
Fayetteville, and to the mouth of Cape Fear River below Wilmington; and
the producers of western North Carolina a choice of two first-rate North
Carolina markets, Fayetteville and Wilmington. |
| There is a liberal charter in
existence for building the proposed road, and we are gratified to see
that the work is attracting public attention. A letter in the
Fayetteville Observer states that Gov. Morehead offers to take one-tenth
of the stock. |
