Mr. Coleman, on behalf of the Committee on
Internal Improvements, reported in favor of the extension of the charter
of the New Orleans and Great Western railroad {New
Orleans, Jackson & Great Western RR}. Also to grant land to carry
the road to the borders of Texas. He showed the importance of a
connection of Louisiana with Texas in case of international war, for the
transportation of troops, &c., and recommended that the road be
continued to New Iberia {about 60 miles west of
Brashear} to connect with the road from Houston, now in progress.
The report is very elaborate. Mr. Coleman stated that Mr. Williamson,
the commissioner to Texas, had informed the commissioner that the
subject was deeply interesting in Texas. |
