Hooker has crossed the Potomac and entered
Maryland to defend Washington City, and if possible frustrate Lee's
designs upon Pennsylvania. He left his buildings at Aquia Creek under
the protection of his gunboats, but a detachment of the 15th Virginia
cavalry fired them under cover of darkness, on Monday night last, and
succeeded in destroying every shanty, warehouse and other building,
together with a portion of the magnificent wharf recently constructed by
the U. S. Government. The railroad from Aquia Creek to Fredericksburg
was left intact by the Yankees, and the iron is now being appropriated
to the use of the Richmond and Fredericksburg railroad
{Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac RR}.
The bridges constructed on this railroad by the Yankees, are superb
structures, and have not yet been destroyed for prudential reasons. |
