Heavy Damage Recovered |
Our readers will remember the
collision which occurred on the {New Orleans &}
Carrollton Railroad at Jackson street, on the evening of the 19th
of August last, by which a child was killed and Mr. Arthur Choppin had
one of his legs crushed, and afterward had to have the leg amputated.
The Carrollton train was at a full stop, and passengers were getting
out; Mr. Choppin was on the platform assisting out his sister-in-law and
her child; he had hold of another child which he had mistaken for his
sister-in-law's, when the lake train came up behind, forcing the cars together,
and killing the child and crushing his leg. Subsequently Mr. C.
instituted suit against the Company in the Sixth District Court for
damages of $50,000. Within the week past the case has been on trial; and
yesterday afternoon the jury awarded to the plaintiff a verdict of
$25,000 damages. The case will probably be appealed t the Supreme Court. |
