Mobile & Great Northern Railroad |
The Mobile Register, of
yesterday morning says that notwithstanding the times, the work on this
road goes bravely on. It adds the following interesting intelligence: |
Notwithstanding the times, the
work on this road goes bravely on; this is as it should be. We have
lately seen a letter from Col. Pollard, President of the Alabama &
Florida {(of Alabama)} Railroad, stating
that his road will be in operation between Montgomery and Pensacola by
the first of July next. In view of this fact, it is highly important for
the commercial interests of Mobile, that the Great Northern Railroad
should also be running between the Alabama & Florida Railroad and the
Tensas River next fall, so as to be able to take off the cotton crop. |
Apart from this consideration,
the road is now imperatively demanded for military purposes. Rather than
it should fail of construction in good time great sacrifices should be
made, but there is no necessity of suffering loss to attain this end.
The work on the road has so far progressed that it can be placed in
running order, from its junction with the Alabama & Florida Railroad to
the Tensas River, in ample time, if the company are not compelled to
stop for want of funds. We are assured that this alternative, although
no reliance can be placed on raising means from the sale of city bonds,
will not be compulsory, if the subscriptions to the capital stock are
paid up on full. |
From the same paper we learn
that the stockholders resident in Mobile are promptly paying up their
subscriptions. |
