Railroad Meeting in Calhoun County |
The citizens of Calhoun county met en masse, at
the court house in the town of Hampton, pursuant to a proper call of the
same. The meeting was called to order by the appointment of A. J. Maner,
esq., to the chair, and on motion, Rev. A. Fortinberry was requested to
act as secretary. |
On motion of P. H. Echols, the chairman appointed a
committee of three, consisting of Dr. P. H. Echols, Mat S. Jones, esq.,
and A. J. Barker, to draft and report resolutions expressive of the
sense of the meeting. |
The above committee retired, and after due time
returned the following preamble and resolutions, which was unanimously
adopted: |
Whereas, The Memphis & Little Rock railroad, now under
construction from the city of Memphis in the State of Tennessee, to the
city of Little Rock in the State of Arkansas, is a work of preeminent
prospective public utility; and whereas, the said road in its central
position tends greatly to open up the wide and immense resources of our
young commonwealth, and at the same time give us direct and
uninterrupted intercourse by railway with many of our sister States; and
whereas, the time has nearly expired at which time the grant of lands to
said road to the Mississippi river, to a stated point on said road, must
revert to the grantor in the absence of the completion of said road
within a decade, from the date of said grant, according to the specific
stipulations of the same -- therefore, |
Be it resolved by this meeting, That the
immediate completion of said road is demanded by various interests. |
Resolved, That we hereby ask the legislature of
the State of Arkansas to authorize the Governor of sid State to
subscribe the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in the
Memphis & Little Rock railroad company, to be paid on the demand of said
company, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated. |
Resolved, That we request the True Democrat, Old
Line Democrat, Little Rock Gazett Southern States, and Camden Eagle to
publish these proceedings. |
