| New Route to Texas |
| Business has already commenced
on the new inland route to Texas, starting from New Iberia, via Lake
Charles, and from thence to Orange, on the Sabine river. A number of
passengers went up a few days ago on the mailboat Cricket, who were
Texas bound, via this route. For the present, we believe, the stages run
only tri-weekly, but will, so soon as the new mail contract goes into
operation, make six trips per week, thus offording almost a daily
communication between Texas and New Orleans. We hope our Congress, now
in session at Richmond, will do something toward extending the Opelousas
Railroad {New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western
RR} from New Iberia to the Sabine, which would greatly add to the
security of that section of our young Confederacy, in case Lincoln
should deem it proper to make any demonstrations against it. |
