| Colonel, |
| On receipt of your letter of the 17th ult.
I instructed the manager of the small negro force to proceed to the
Salines and commence work. |
| Your letter of the 23d ult. in relation to
the collection of old iron was duly recd. The old cast & wro't iron
saved from the Holston and Watauga Bridges was claimed by the E. Ten. &
Va. R. R. Co. on the ground that the cost of the new bridges would be
ultimately paid by the Co. to the Govt. I will endeavor to aid in the
collection of old iron. |
| Your letter of the 26th has also been
received. The plan of Prof. Thomassy does not contemplate or admit
of the covers or shelters proposed by you. I agree with you in opinion
as to the probable necessity for the shelters. |
| In reply to your dispatch of the 31st. I
stated by telegraph that the amount paid to Genl. Duff Green was Eleven
hundred dollars & twenty two cents for 14 1500/2240 tons of iron at
$75.00 per ton. |
| Very Respectfully |
| L. P. Grant |
