Western & Atlantic

Owned by the State of Georgia, it was chartered in1838. Construction began in 1839 and was completed in 1850. It connected Atlanta to Dalton, Georgia and then on to Chattanooga. It was the lifeline for the Army of Tennessee for about two years.

The Western & Atlantic probably operated the Etowah Railroad.

Track 138 miles of 5 foot gauge; at the end of 1860 had 50 miles of new, 53# T rail (nearest to Atlanta), the rest being 41# U-rail; 10/62, rest of rail was on hand and being laid with completion planned for 6/63
