South Carolina |
| This road was made by
consolidating several smaller lines and adding new branches. Its first
component, the Charleston & Hamburg, was one of the first half-dozen
railroads in the United States and was built to increase the traffic of
Charleston Harbor. The finished road was one of the longest in the
South. It was, among other things, the link between Charleston and
Augusta -- two major cities of the Confederacy's war effort.
