There were 99 miles of heavy rail and 41.5 miles of flat bar track on the main line. There were 9.5 miles of heavy rail and 6.5 miles of flat bar track on sidings.

During the past year, 6.5 miles of flat rail was replaced with heavy rail, 3.25 miles of which came from sidings. The substitution has continued and only 4 miles of flat rail remain between Richmond and the Junction.

During the year, the length of sidings has increased 1/2 mile.

In August 1860, 1,000 tons of 50.5# T-rail was bought from England through Tredegar Iron Works. This rail was probably received before the blockade prevented importation.

September 30, 1863

5.3 miles of heavy rail, obtained from the government, replaced flat bar between Chula and Amelia Court House. This reduced the total length of flat bar on the main track to 36.5 miles. Heavy track is complete from Richmond to Junction -- 53.5 miles.

Sidings were reduced slightly -- to 15.9 miles.

September 30, 1864

25 miles (Staunton River to Meherrin Depot) of flat bar rail was replaced with heavy iron provided by the government. The flat bar between Meherrin Depot and Junction (15 miles) was to be replaced with heavy iron as soon as the previous segment was completed.

Sidings were reduced to 14 miles and the removed track used to repair the main line.
