"Connection" was to the South Side Railroad, 53 miles from Richmond. Though the South Side fed Petersburg, it is unlikely that goods would be sent from Richmond to Petersburg by way of the Richmond & Danville and the South Side. Almost all goods connecting with the South Side were destined for use in Lynchburg or for further shipment past Lynchburg, on the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad, toward Chattanooga.
