| Since construction of this railroad did not start until well after the war started, it had no locomotives when the war began. | |||||||

Lee (B&O #226 captured by Jackson in 1861) was purchased from the government and placed on the road in September. Atlas (a Pope capture, named Ferguson by the US) was leased from the Richmond & Danville RR and was placed on the road in October. General Pettigrew, Black Dwarf and Roanoke were obtained from the Confederate government (Roanoke had come from the Roanoke Valley RR). General Pettigrew was the captured Union Exeter and was on the tracks starting in December. Amelia was acquired from the Richmond & Danville RR. The captured "34" was bought from the Government in June; I have not identified it among the Piedmont's locomotives. |
