| The railroads hence are engaged in a great
measure in army transportation, though travel is, of course, at an end,
and this heavy item of railroad profit cannot be counted upon at all
this season. In some parts the trains run exclusively for military
purposes; local travel being incidental, and the passengers waiting for
the war trains. The Orange & Alexandria railroad runs now no further
than Fairfax station; below that point the enemy have torn it up except
the part adjacent to Alexandria, which they use for military purposes.
From Manassas and Warrenton Junction down, there seemed to be the usual
amount of way travel. Your correspondent would remark, en passant,
that he has been indebted for courtesies from officers on this and on
the {Virginia} Central road. ***** |
