From the Richmond Dispatch

March 9, 1864

A special to the Atlanta Appeal, from Macon, Miss, says that the Yankees are all across the Big Black. They burned nothing in Canton. They captured and carried off three officers of the Mississippi Central Railroad, and many negroes, and destroyed provisions wherever found. They burned many houses in the country. The railroad is running from above within a few miles of Canton.
