| The completion of the repairs on the
Orange & Alexandria Railroad has, on our right especially, been of great
service to us. This road, leading direct from the Junction to
Alexandria, was, it will be remembered, very badly used before the
engagement of the 21st of July. For two months, indeed, before that time
there had been no regular business done on it beyond Fairfax Station. On
the advance of the enemy, it ceased altogether, and the bridges were
either taken down or destroyed. These have now all been replaced and the
road otherwise repaired, so that now the way is open clear to us as far
as the enemy's lines at Alexandria. This has been of great service to
us, not only in the transportation of provisions, stores and heavy
freight, but of troops also. |
