Dear Sir,
    I enclose you a copy of a letter which I have also resent to Col. Garnett, the Comr for distribution of Iron.
   The disposition of the 11 miles of Iron which I understand is to be taken from the W. C. &. R. RR {Wilmington, Charlotte & Rutherford RR} surprises me. I hope you will see Col Garnett & impress him with the necessity of letting my Road have the 11 miles of Iron. The Iron is at hand & why send it abroad & then fuss after transport the iron to us. For I take it for granted that he is already appraised of the absolute necessity of our having as much of this quantity within a very short time. And there is indeed no time to be lost, if Govt intends to aid us & return to us what has been destroyed by their compulsory service, for ??? ??? how cons??ted to run the number of trains, except to furnish Govt Transportation. Besides, I address you that it will be exceedingly galling to our people to have this iron sent abroad, when it is so impassionedly demanded by the necessities of one of their own roads. Doing such important service for Govt. I beg you ??? ??? to it & have it ??ted.
   I sent my Treasurer to Charleston a day or two ago to settle up some a/cs with the Quarter Master (Maj. Lee) there. He presented the enclosed statement of a/cs which he held against this road. They occurred in this way. In Dec'br there was a heavy movement of troops from Chas'ton to this place. We allowed the N. E. Road {Northeastern RR} & S. C. Road {South Carolina RR} the usual rates that we were in the habit of paying them for doing transportation over this road, but they were dissatisfied with this & claimed more -- these a/cs. Now surely it is not just that this additional amt shd be paid by this road. If the Govt demanded the work to be done & impresses the stock to do it, surely the Govt ought to pay for it, & not deduct it from the earnings of this road. I am very desirous to have these a/cs al?d with the present currency. It is right & just to do so, & therefore, I trust that the Govt will at once resume the payt of them through its Qr Master at Char'ton & discharge my road from the claim.
Very Truly Yours
Thos D. Walker
Prest {President, Wilmington & Manchester RR}
