   I am directed by Genl. Lee to say in reply to your letter of 10th inst:, relative to the procurement of railroad iron from Charleston, that not knowing the relative necessity for the iron at Wilmington & Charleston; nor any of the circumstances attending its purchase by the Govt. he could not order the quantity you desire to be sent you, without being previously informed on these points. He has instructed you by telegraph to inquire of Genl. Ripley whether the iron can be had, and is confident that officer will render you every assistance in his power and send what can be spared from the defences of Charleston. Can you not use the iron of the road to New Bern? {Atlantic & North Carolina RR}
I am very respy
