C. G. Talcott   {Superintendent, Richmond & Danville RR}
Genl Supt.

Dear Sir,
   By the report of freight brought over the Piedmont road it appears that there was the following ??? at Danville:
Feby 5th 49 cars
" 6 " 60 "
" 7 " 61 "
   Your attention is invited to the gradual increase and I would urge you to exert yourself to its elimination {that is, the elimination of the backup that is building in Danville because the Piedmont RR is increasing its deliveries}, before the pressure is so great as to result in the temporary stoppage of all your mail trains.
   The necessities of the army are furnished to you and I will not rehearse them. But with the great responsibility resting upon you to make the R&D RRd Co equal to the work thrown on it, a responsibility which the public and the army look to you to discharge. I am sure you cannot rest satisfied when having anything undone to accomplish this result. I am not charging you with leaving anything undone, but state the need as strongly as I can that you may feel the important position you hold before the community and that the measure in which you acquit yourself will decide your future reputation.
Yrs truly
