Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, May 20th 1864

Mr. Gill
Supt R&P RR  {Superintendent, Richmond & Petersburg RR}

Sir,
   I would be glad to know the earliest moment at which I may hope to hear that the repairs on your road are complete. The successful defense of this city & the provisioning of Genl. Lee's Army are in a measure dependent on the opening of that road. I am informed that all the iron that you need has been brought up by the {Richmond &} York River Road & is now in this city, & that every request for assistance from the military authorities, made by your has been complied with. Can anything further be done to aid you?
A. R. Lawton, Q. M. Genl.
