Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, April 27, 1863

Dr. G. G. Griffin
Prest. Ala. & Miss. R. Rd   {President, Alabama & Mississippi Rivers RR}
Demopolis, Ala.

Sir,
   I am advised by Mr. Samuel Tate, who was charged by General Bragg's order, with the construction of the North East & South West {Alabama} Rail Road between Meridian and York Station, that One hundred and seventeen thousand dollars (117,000$) have been advanced by the Government in such construction. For the reimbursement of this sum, a claim exists against that Road.
   The Alabama & Mississippi {Rivers} Road, having leased the North East & South West Road, it is understood, receives the earnings of the whole line.
   With a view to the adjustment of this claim of the Government, I request that the amount, to be paid by the Alabama & Mississippi {Rivers} Road to North East & South West Road, whether in the form of a specific rent, or  a pro rata share of the earnings of the whole line, shall be retained by you, so that it may be paid on account of the indebtedness of the North East & South West Rail Road to the Government. The payment can be made by your Company to any bonded Confederate States Quarter Master.
A C. Myers, Q. M. Genl.
