Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, March 18, 1862

Gen. J. E. Johnston
Commanding
Culpeper C. H.

Gen. Holmes reports seven million five hundred thousand pounds Quartermaster & Commissary stores at Fredericksburg that should be hauled to some depot to be designated by you. Where will you have a depot for these supplies? If they are to be transported from Fredericksburg, eight freight cars & two twenty ton engines should be sent here from Gordonsville. There are neither cars nor engines to do the work on the Fredericksburg R. Rd. {Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac RR}. It is necessary that you give the order for the cars and engines to be sent to Richmond. The store houses on the road are all full. Shall the stores be brought to Richmond?
