| I learn from Capt. Robinson
that his application to Gen. Hill, based on my dispatch, secured the
return of your employees. I write this hasty note to urge on you the
importance of getting this machinery in order for removal as promptly
as possible; & to require all the work of these hands that they
are capable of performing. I still hope & believe that we will
hold Petersburg; but the stakes are too valuable for us to run any
risks, & I beg that there be as little delay as possible in
preparing this machinery for removal. This Dept. will furnish all
possible assistance. |
