Quartermaster General's Department
Jan. 11th 1865

Gen. R. E. Lee

I have just heard of very serious damage to Piedmont Road from heavy rains, & request that no furloughs be granted for 10 days to go South except to those able to walk across the gap to Stoney Creek. Meanwhile every possible effort is being made by borrowing from farmers & by wagon trains to supply your army.
