{The pages before those transcribed are not in the National Archives. The letter was probably written in early March 1862 to Confederate Senator W. S. Oldham to support a bill he introduced on March 14, 1862 in support of the Eastern Texas RR.}

   ????? these U S bonds from our Company in payment of this debt. Or release the same to our Company, that they may be employed as heretofore suggested. As these Bonds were liable for the payment of the Iron, and may be regarded as a security for the payment of the debt. We are willing if it is necessary to substitute Land and Some Script of sufficient quantity and value to ensure the payment of the debt to the C. S. 
   Our Company is now entitled to 650 sections of Land Scrip for 640 acres each Making 416,000 acres
   one forth of which is pledged to secure the payment of debts for Labor
   1/4 appropriated for sale to pay debts due by the Company
   and all except the latter has been contracted to be located & surveyed
   80 Sections on line of road in Auyelina Cty
   100      "        "    "    "     "    "  Tyler & Hardin Cty
   300      "        " North West Texas, Near Red River for which we give one fourth of the land taking out above appropriations and the 1/4 for surveying, will leave the Company say 200 Sections of land which are now in process of location, that can be used in securing the Payment of the debts to the CS, provided we are Condemned to pay the same

   It is not necessary to urge upon you the importance of this Road to Eastern Texas and the urgent necessity for placing the affairs of the Company in a healthy & prosperous condition, that we may be prepared when hostilities cease, to push this enterprise through with vigor and despatch
