Wm Johnston  Esq
Presdt Charlotte & S. C. R. R. Co.  {Charlotte & South Carolina RR}

Sir,
   Your letter of the 13th inst in reference to the expediency of leaving untouched the eleven or twelve miles of iron nearest to the Southern terminus of the Charlotte & Statesville R. R. {Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio RR} has been recd. Orders to that effect were issued and forwarded by telegraph on 9th inst. I regret to learn that they were not recd in time to prevent the dismantling of the road to a point within seven miles of Charlotte. As it was intended to leave twelve miles of iron upon the road, instructions will be given to store at Charlotte subject to your order, five miles of iron with spikes &c. which with the seven miles not yet removed from the tract, make up the proposed amount.
Yours Vey resp'y
J. F. Gilmer
