Colonel W. H. Stevens
Chief of Construction Dept. N. Va. Richmond, Va.

Colonel,
The President deems it of the utmost importance to repair the Va. Central R. Rd. as promptly as possible. Assist the company therefore in every possible way & confer with Mr. Whitcomb the Suptd. Timber of suitable dimensions is doubtless the greatest want, & hence I enclose you an order from Lieut. Parker of the Navy to place at your disposal all the probably required supply. You will find 12" x 12" in various lengths at the Navy Yard and also at Ashland on the R. F. &. P. R. Rd. {Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac RR} In addition there is a large supply of 2 1/2" plank near the Central R. Rd. Depot which may be used if needed. Lt. Parker's office is at the corner of 9th & Bank Sts. just opposite the War Department.
Very Respectfully Yours
J. F. Gilmer
Col. of Engrs. & Chf of Bureau
