Capt. L. P. Grant
Corps of Engineers
Augusta, Ga.

Captain,
I am directed by Maj Gen Gilmer to acknowledge receipt of your report of 2d inst giving progress of repairs on Georgia RR & stating that you will yet have the Road running thro' to Atlanta in the month of April. As time is so pressing you will urge the employment of the forces that have been employed on the Atlanta & W. Pt. Road & the Macon & Western Road to assist you in completing the Georgia Road. If Maj Gen M L Smith be within your reach apply to him. If not apply to Capts Glenn & Hazlehurst for all the assistance that they can give from the working forces under their directions. Every effort is now being made to establish a line of Transportation from Augusta Ga to Charlotte N. C. with a view to get supplies forward from Alabama & So. western Ga. But the section of Road on which you are engaged is a link in the connexion. You will therefore appreciate the importance of unceasing exertions on your part, and the necessity of calling promptly for the aid of all who can help you.
It is hoped you will have a sufficiency of spikes with those that can be collected from other Roads. If this is not the case telegraph the quantity you will want at once.
The Qr. Mr. Dept. & all agents of transportation are much concerned about the completion of the Georgia Road. All are looking to you.
Very respectfully
Yr obt Svt
J. H. Alexander
