| I am instructed by Lieut Genl
Smith to say he has been furnished by Brig Genl Hebert with a copy of an
estimate required for repairing the V. S. & T. Rail Road
{Vicksburg, Shreveport & Texas RR}, and to
say that as he understands you are withdrawing your forces, or a portion
of them, he thinks the policy of repairing that road at present, a very
doubtful one, for should it be put in running order, and a sufficient
force not kept to protect it from the enemy, it would certainly be
destroyed by them, in however you intend keeping a small force at
Richmond it may be necessary in order to communicate with or supply them
to have the bridge up to that point repaired, in which event you will
have it done. |
