Quarter Master Greensboro N. C.

Major,
I am directed by Maj Genl Gilmer to say, that to furnish the necessary supplies to the Army of Northern Va it is imperative that the Richmond & Danville R. R. which has been broken by the enemy should be repaired at the earliest possible day. To this end Rail Road iron must be obtained from the Charlotte & Statesville R. R. {Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio RR} & Genl Gilmer has just assigned Lieut. Col. Clarke, of the Engineers, to the duty of collecting & forwarding the iron to Danville Va & he has now to request that you will give him every assistance in your power to hasten the work.
The Genl also desires you to make arrangements at once to send engine & cars (flats) to Statesville to receive & transport the iron as fast as it can be taken up from the Road & that you supply a large working force to expedite the work.
I am Major
Very Respectfully
 Yr. obt. servant
