Believing that my services are of more value to the Govt and the army in my present position, than they would be if I joined my command, I hereby respectfully tender the resignation of ,my commission as 1st Lieut of Co B, 2d Texas Infantry.
Very respectfully

{on back of document}
I respectfully certify that Lt D C Smith is a practical & finished mechanic and that his services are indispensable to our road and that I cannot supply his place.

Approved & respectfully forwarded. This Lieut is a mechanic & has been for some time on detached service. He desires to resign in order that his place as an officer may be filled from the ranks, since the duties can be performed by him as readily as a detailed man, as an officer.
