| Endorsement on letter from Hugh Rice,
Supt. Manassas Gap R. Rd. dated Richmond, Va. May 12th 1863. Has a
number of wagon loads of scrap iron and various portions on machinery
which he thinks will be of use to the Government and says it is being
stolen by citizens & the enemy -- desires some Govt. teams to haul
it to Staunton -- will pay for the same. Will sell the iron to the
Government at market price. |
| "Respectfully referred to the Hon.
Sec. of War with the request that the Qr. Master Genl. be asked to
direct that transportation be furnished if possible to the Supt. of
the Manassas Gap R. Rd. for the purpose of saving the scrap iron and
parts of machinery, now so much needed for the public service. The
hauling will be over good macadamized road to Staunton, say 50
miles." |
