Unusual sources that will
provide only a very few documents, for example, a transcription of a
letter or order on a web site. I will try to give the source at the

Comments and Warnings Regarding the Transcribed
Documents |
| 1. |
The transcriptions from the Official Records,
newspapers and books are
from printed copies; therefore, transcription errors are
someone else's. |
| 2. |
Most other transcriptions are from the original
(usually microfilmed) documents. Since these documents were in
cursive writing, and were often written in a hurry, there are
bound to be transcription errors on my part. Unless the
meaning of the document is changed by a possible error in
transcription, I have made little effort to resolve
transcription problems (ie I have not tried to verify the
initials of the names of various quartermasters). |
| 3. |
There are many more documents that I have not
transcribed. There are orders to quartermasters to provide
transportation for various companies and regiments in 1861 (I
provide the ones sent directly to the railroad companies),
there are many requests regarding charging various rates on
various roads, and there are documents (particularly in press
letterbooks) where so little of the document could be read
that it seemed useless to provide what little could be
deciphered. There are also documents where the ink has run
together or the ink has faded away. Finally, there documents where the microfilm copy is so
small that it cannot be read. |
| 4. |
I have attempted to identify railroads and
railroad personnel in the transcriptions. Otherwise, I have
rarely provided editorial notes. For example, there is an
order for certain Navy personnel to be given special
assistance in transporting a shaft from Richmond to New
Orleans. I understand from other sources that this was for the
ironclad Mississippi, but since I have no document to prove
this, I have left the raw data for the researcher to use on
his own. |
| 5. |
Almost all of the outgoing letters and telegrams
from the Quartermaster General are copied in his letterbook
and are transcribed. The incoming letters were logged, but
most were not saved. The same appears to be true of the
Engineer Bureau. The Railroad Bureau is represented by only a
tiny portion of its correspondence. The Iron Commission is
also missing in the records. The result is a very fragmented
record, on the Government side, and an almost non-existent one
on the companies' sides. This fragmentation is one reason I
have posted the transcriptions. |
